Bakunawa

Bakunawa

Moon Eater

Moon Eater

The Bakunawa originates in the Philippines, but there are similar tales across Asia and towards India. The natives of these areas believe that the Bakunawa is responsible for eclipses, earthquakes, rain and wind and the destruction of moons!

The Bakunawa is said to have a body covered in scales as would be expected from a sea serpent, and it possesses gills which would suggest that this is a beast that is limited to the sea, however I cannot confirm this detail. It is also said to have wings, large ones on its upper body and smaller ones lower down on its flank. It has a gaping mouth, which can be compared to the size of a large lake.
